Root Canal treatment (RCT) is one of the most important & routinely done procedure to salvage extensively decayed, cracked/chipped, broken , previously filled/restored crowned teeth.
The soft center of the tooth known as the pulp is susceptible to bacterial infection when your tooth is cracked or chipped. Also, tooth injury or trauma can cause pulp inflammation. If the condition is left untreated, it may cause microbial invasion and result in tooth abscess, severe pain, bone loss, and even tooth loss. RCT is the best and effective way to preserve the structure of the tooth and immediately relieve the tooth pain .
It prolongs the life of an infected tooth by treating the infection. It usually is done in 2 sittings, where, in the first sitting, the root canals are completely cleaned, followed by a second sitting, where the root canals are filled with a permanent filling material. We split the procedure in to two sittings, to provide the required essential healing time to the tooth. An infected tooth may require an additional sitting, wherein we put medication within the tooth, for its better healing.
Post Root Canal Treatment, the lost tooth structure is replaced with a Ceramic Onlay or Crown. This is done to strengthen the weakened tooth structure so that it continues to function and withstand the biting forces.
Onlay: is a customized Compressed ceramic / metallic filling that is fabricated very precisely in a dental laboratory. It comes with the benefit of preserving the remaining healthy tooth structure thereby preventing any more cutting of the original tooth structure which in turn prolongs the life of the tooth.
Crown: is amongst the popular methods to replace the lost tooth structure post a RCT or in case of a Fractured tooth. The material of the crown is chosen as per the tooth under treatment.
